When donors create Recurring Gifts through Raise, it’s important to track which Campaign or appeal inspired their commitment. Segments help you maintain this attribution over time—but how do they apply to each recurring payment? For organizations syncing Raise with Virtuous CRM+, understanding how Segments flow through to Recurring Gifts ensures accurate fundraising reporting.
First Things First
Recurring Gifts are automatic, scheduled payments for ongoing support to your organization. It's common to think of these as monthly giving, but Recurring Gifts can also include quarterly payments, annual support, or even bimonthly donations. Segments track the origin of a donation and are part of the Campaign hierarchy attached to each Gift. Segments can be applied to any Gift, one time or recurring, manually in the Import Tool or automatically through Giving Form or Integration Settings.
Raise has different routes for how Segments are applied to Gifts set in the Giving Form, Campaign, CRM+ Integration Settings, or by using a Custom URL. The Segment on the first payment may differ from following payments depending on which of these settings was created. To help give you a roadmap of the process for how a Segment gets attached to a recurring payment, we created this infographic to outline the process. This flowchart shows the decision points that determine which Segment will attach to each recurring payment based on your configuration settings.
Example Recurring Gift Scenario
To better illustrate exactly when and how a Segment attaches to different recurring payments in a schedule, let's walk through a couple of scenarios using an example of a donor creating a new Recurring Gift as a part of the End of Year 2026 Campaign.
Scenario 1
The toggle for attaching Segments to Recurring Gifts from End of Year 2026 Campaign is off. Only the donor's first payment has the EOY Webpage Segment set from the Giving Form Settings.
When the second payment is processed, Raise will attach the default Segment, for example, Default Recurring Gift Segment, from the Raise Integration Settings for Virtuous CRM+. All future recurring payments that follow will also use the Default Recurring Gift Segment.
Scenario 2
The toggle for attaching Segments to Recurring Gifts from End of Year 2026 Campaign is on. The donor's first and all following payments will have the EOY Webpage Segment from Giving Form Settings. When the Campaign ends next year, the Segment will change to the Default Recurring Gift Segment set in the Virtuous CRM+ Integration Settings.
Scenario 3
The toggle for attaching Segments to Recurring Gifts from End of Year 2026 Campaign is on. The donor creates the Recurring Gift using a link with a custom URL. The donor's first Gift has the EOY Facebook Post Segment from the custom URL. The following payments have the EOY Webpage Segment from Giving Form Settings. When the Campaign ends next year, the Segment will change to the Default Recurring Gift Segment set in the Virtuous CRM+ Integration Settings.
