Every online donation processed through Virtuous Payments in Raise charges a processing fee. This fee covers services from the donor's bank, the payment network, and the card processor. You can ask donors to cover this processing fee on top of their Gift, so the full donation amount goes to your Projects. Learn how fees work, how to add the covered fees option to a Giving Form, and how to choose where covered fees are recorded.
How Much Are Processing Fees and When Are They Collected?
Virtuous Payments, powered by Stripe, generally collects 2.9% + $0.30 per transaction. Virtuous Payments collects the fee at the time of the transaction. To learn more about fees and transaction limits, check out this support article.
How Do I Enable the Donor Covered Fees Option?
The Cover Cost component is already added to your Giving Form by default. To review it, open the page builder and scroll down to the component. You can set the option to default to selected, or delete the component to remove the option altogether.
Where Do The Covered Costs Go?
When a donor covers the credit card processing fee, Virtuous Raise records the extra money in your Project reporting. You have the option to choose which Project these fees are designated to.
To choose where the donor-paid costs are recorded, navigate to Settings > Organization. Scroll to the Processing Fees Project Settings section, and select an option.
- Split fees into a processing fees project (default). The fee is recorded as its own line in the CREDITCARDCOSTS Project. If a donor does not cover the fee, nothing changes. The Gift goes entirely to the Projects the donor chose.
-
Send fees to the projects the donor chose. The fee is added to the Projects the donor gave to. There is no separate fee line. If a donor does not cover the fee, nothing changes. The Gift goes entirely to the Projects the donor chose.
- Note: With this option, the total amount charged to the donor is the same as with any other option, and no money is recorded in CREDITCARDCOSTS. Instead, each Project the donor gave to receives its share of the fee on top of the amount the donor chose for it. Raise divides the fee in proportion to how much the donor gave to each Project. For example, a donor gives $100, split $60 to Clean Water and $40 to School Supplies, and covers a $3.30 fee. Clean Water receives $1.98 of the fee, and School Supplies receives $1.32.
- Always split fees into a processing fees project. The fee is recorded as its own line in the CREDITCARDCOSTS Project. If a donor does not cover the fee, the fee is still recorded in CREDITCARDCOSTS and is taken out of the amount given to the donor’s Projects.
